From Hardcoded Pitfalls to Smart Fallbacks: Navigating LLM Providers and Charting New Features

Welcome back to another peek behind the curtain of our development journey! This week, our session was a blend of immediate problem-solving and ambitious future planning. We tackled a critical bug that, ironically, highlighted a key architectural vulnerability, and then shifted gears to blueprint some truly transformative features.

The Bug Hunt: When Your LLM Provider Runs Dry

The immediate challenge presented itself when we tried to export knowledge from a discussion. Our system, designed to leverage powerful LLMs for insights, hit a snag: an HTTP 400 error from the Anthropic API, loudly proclaiming, "Your credit balance is too low to access the Anthropic API." Ouch! A very real-world problem that many developers can relate to.

This wasn't just a simple "top up the credits" situation; it exposed a deeper architectural flaw. Our src/server/services/discussion-knowledge.ts file, responsible for generating these crucial digests and insights, had a hardcoded dependency: it explicitly tried to resolve the Anthropic provider. This meant if Anthropic wasn't available (for any reason, not just credits), the entire discussion knowledge export process would grind to a halt.

The Fix: Embracing Resilience with Smart Fallbacks

This pain point became a catalyst for a more robust solution. We realized the need for a dynamic, intelligent provider selection. Our previous session had already laid some groundwork with commit 6744e4a, introducing smart provider and model selection for discussions. Now, it was time to extend that intelligence to our export functionality.

We introduced a new helper function: resolveWorkingProvider(). Instead of blindly calling Anthropic, this function now first attempts to use the discussion's preferred providers. If those fail, it gracefully falls back, cycling through all available LLM_PROVIDERS configured for the tenant until it finds one that works. This not only solved the immediate credit crunch issue (as other providers like Kimi and OpenAI were happily processing requests) but also future-proofed our system against single-provider outages or credit issues.

Beyond the core logic, we also cleaned up by removing the HAIKU_MODEL constant from discussion-knowledge.ts. We then refactored generateDiscussionDigest and extractDiscussionInsights to directly accept an LLMProvider instance instead of just a tenantId. This makes the code more explicit, testable, and type-safe – a significant win for maintainability. And yes, the type checker gives us a clean bill of health!

Looking Ahead: Charting New Horizons

With the immediate technical debt addressed and our system made more resilient, our focus shifted to the horizon. The next major feature set we're embarking on is designed to significantly enhance how users interact with and derive value from our platform.

1. Action Points System: Turning Insights into Action

Imagine discussions leading directly to actionable tasks. We're building a dedicated "Action Points" tab on project pages. These won't just be generic to-dos; they'll be categorized into themes like innovation, security, platform, architecture, refactoring, and UI/UX to provide immediate context. Each action point will serve as a seed, capable of spawning a full workflow, effectively bridging the gap between high-level insight and concrete execution.

2. Cross-Project Pattern Detection: Proactive Problem Solving

One of the most exciting capabilities involves leveraging our understanding across projects. If a faulty or insecure pattern is identified in one project, our system will automatically scan other projects for similar occurrences. This will generate an organized "Auto-Todo" list, neatly categorized by project, type, and priority, allowing teams to proactively address systemic issues before they escalate.

3. Persona CRUD with AI-Assisted Creation: Tailored Intelligence

To make our AI interactions even more nuanced and powerful, we're introducing full CRUD (Create, Read, Update, Delete) for personas. Users will be able to define specific "experts" – for instance, "an expert in quantum physics with a PhD level understanding of cryptography." Our AI will then assist in creating these personas, suggesting gender-neutral identities, allowing users to pick and refine the perfect AI collaborator for any task.

Under the Hood: The Technical Blueprint

Implementing these ambitious features requires foundational changes. We're looking at new schema models for ActionPoint and AutoTodo, and an expansion of our existing Persona model with more fields. Naturally, this means new tRPC routers and procedures to handle the API interactions, and dedicated dashboard pages (/dashboard/action-points, /dashboard/personas) to provide intuitive user interfaces.

Conclusion

This session was a powerful reminder that sometimes, the most challenging bugs lead to the most significant architectural improvements. By turning a credit crunch into a catalyst for a smarter LLM provider strategy, we've made our platform more robust.
